Who Wings treats for mental health and substance use

Wings is a mental health program, not an addiction treatment center. What matters is which problem comes first. The clinical assessment decides, and admissions will tell you honestly.

Depression, anxiety or trauma is the main concern, and drinking or drug use has become part of how you cope

Wings treats both together

You drink or use cannabis to sleep, calm down or stop memories

Wings treats both together

You need medical detox from alcohol or drugs

Detox first at a detox program, then Wings. Admissions helps plan the timing

Addiction is the main concern

Admissions will help you find an addiction treatment program that fits

How it shows up

When drinking or drug use becomes a way to cope

It often starts as a way to get through: to sleep, to calm down, to stop the memories. Over time it makes the depression, anxiety or trauma harder to treat.

  • Drinking to sleep

A drink, or a few, to switch off at night.

  • Using to calm anxiety

Cannabis or alcohol to take the edge off panic or worry.

  • Numbing memories

Using more when trauma comes up, or around certain dates.

  • Mood that crashes after

Feeling lower, more anxious or more irritable the next day.

  • Hiding it from people

Family noticing before you are ready to talk about it.

  • A hospital stay

An inpatient stay or a 5150 hold where drinking or drugs played a part.

How it is treated

Mental health and substance use, treated in one plan

  • One team for both

The same therapists and psychiatrist treat the mental health and the substance use, in one plan.

  • What sits underneath

A trauma therapist on every team, because drinking and drug use are often a way of coping with trauma.

  • Skills for urges and triggers

DBT, CBT and ACT skills groups, with time to practice them in daily routines.

  • Psychiatry every week

A medication visit every week, with your substance use taken into account.

  • A plan for after

Step down to PHP and IOP with the same therapist, with supportive housing available.

Our clinical approach
If you need detox

Detox first, then straight to Wings

Wings does not provide medical detox. If you need it, admissions plans the timing with you so there is no gap between detox and treatment.

  1. 1

    Call admissions

A short phone screen about your mental health, what you use and how much.

  2. 2

    Medical detox

At a detox program, when the assessment says you need it.

  3. 3

    Start at Wings

A start date set to follow detox, with records and timing coordinated.

Levels of care

Residential, PHP and IOP for dual diagnosis

The clinical assessment decides where you start. Length of stay is set clinically, reviewed as you progress, and depends on what your plan authorizes.

  1. Step 1

    Residential

Full therapy days and support 24/7, living in a Wings home.

  2. Step 2

    Partial hospitalization (PHP)

  3. Step 3

    Intensive outpatient (IOP)

Five days a week to start, morning or evening, around work.

Is Wings the right fit?

When an addiction or detox program fits better

If another program would serve you better, admissions will say so and help with the next step.

  • Addiction is the main concern

Admissions will help you find an addiction treatment program

  • You need medical detox

Detox comes first, at a detox program

  • Active psychosis or a primary eating disorder

These need a different level of care

  • Under 18

Admissions can point you to adolescent care

Will my drinking or drug use be treated too?

Yes, when it comes with a mental health condition. Mental health is the main focus, and substance use is treated on the same plan. If medical detox is needed first, admissions can help you find it.

Is Wings an addiction treatment center?

Wings is a primary mental health program. If addiction is the main concern, admissions will help you find a program that fits.

Do I need detox before I come to Wings?

If you need medical detox from alcohol or drugs, it happens first at a detox program. Admissions can talk through timing so the move to Wings follows straight on.

Can Wings help if I drink to cope with trauma or anxiety?

Yes. When depression, anxiety or trauma is the main concern, drinking or drug use that comes with it is treated as part of the plan, with a trauma therapist on your team.

Can I come from a psychiatric hospital?

Yes. Wings is often the next step after an inpatient stay or a 5150 hold, including when substance use played a part. We work with discharge planners on timing and records.

Is there housing after residential?

Yes. In PHP and IOP you can live in Wings supportive housing, with house managers on site.

Will insurance cover dual diagnosis treatment?

Wings works with many PPO plans, including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare. Admissions verifies your benefits before admission at no cost. If you have Medi-Cal or Medicare, admissions can point you to programs that accept them.
