Beyond Talk Therapy

We integrate advanced trauma-processing therapies alongside a full suite of holistic and experiential modalities, because lasting emotional balance requires treating the whole person.

Every approach is chosen for its ability to reach what standard therapy often can’t: the stored trauma, the protective survival patterns, and the parts of the nervous system that words alone don’t touch.

EMDR

EMDR is used to help clients reprocess distressing memories at a neurological level — reducing their emotional charge and breaking the cycle of trauma responses that have shaped daily life. For many clients, it produces movement where years of talk therapy couldn’t.

Brainspotting

By identifying specific eye positions that correlate with unprocessed emotional experience, therapists help clients access and release trauma that exists below conscious awareness. It’s particularly effective for complex trauma, dissociation, and conditions where verbal processing alone isn’t enough.

Internal Family Systems

IFS is a powerful framework for understanding the different wounded parts of ourselves and building a relationship with each of them from a place of curiosity rather than shame. IFS helps clients develop a more compassionate, grounded relationship with their own inner world.

Moral Reconation Therapy

MRT is a structured, evidence-based approach that works directly with moral reasoning, identity, and the belief systems that drive behavior. I’s used to help clients examine the values and thought patterns that have shaped their choices, and build a more stable, values-aligned sense of self as a foundation for lasting recovery.

Equine Therapy

Working with horses offers something the therapy room can’t always replicate — immediate, non-verbal feedback from an animal that responds entirely to your nervous system state. Equine therapy builds self-awareness, emotional regulation, and trust in a way that’s grounded, embodied, and often impactful for trauma survivors.

Nutrition Therapy

Chronic stress and trauma dysregulate the body at every level, including how it processes food, sleep, and basic self-care. Wings’ nutrition program addresses the gut-brain connection directly, helping clients rebuild physical health, stabilize mood through diet, and reconnect with the body as something worth caring for.

Art Therapy

Art therapy gives expression to what language sometimes can’t hold. Through drawing, painting, and other creative processes, clients externalize internal experiences, process emotion non-verbally, and often access material that traditional talk therapy hasn’t been able to reach.

Acupuncture and Cupping Therapy

Both acupuncture and cupping work directly with the nervous system and the body’s stress response. For clients carrying the physical weight of chronic trauma like tension, dysregulation, and somatic symptoms, these therapies offer relief that is tangible, immediate, and deeply supportive of the overall healing process.

Music Therapy & Rock to Recovery

Rock to Recovery brings live music-making into the treatment setting where clients collaborate, write, and perform together in a process that builds community, releases emotion, and activates parts of the brain that clinical sessions don´t always reach.

FAQs

What does Wings Recovery treat?

Wings Recovery is a primary mental health and trauma treatment program in Carlsbad, California — not an addiction or detox program. We treat adults experiencing PTSD, complex trauma (C-PTSD), major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, borderline personality disorder, dissociative disorders, and co-occurring conditions where mental health is the primary clinical driver. Wings does not treat addiction-only cases.

Trauma presents differently across genders — in how it’s internalized, how it surfaces in group settings, and what therapeutic conditions allow people to engage with it honestly. Wings offers separate residential programs for men and women because gender-specific environments reduce social performance pressure, create greater psychological safety for disclosure, and allow for clinical approaches that are responsive to how each gender actually experiences and processes trauma. It’s a clinical decision, not just a structural one.

Yes. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are integrated into treatment at Wings Recovery for clients where medication is clinically appropriate. Our medical team works alongside therapists to ensure that psychiatric care and therapeutic work are coordinated, because for many clients with complex trauma, mood disorders, or co-occurring conditions, medication is an important part of stabilization and progress.

Yes. Wings integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) alongside advanced trauma-processing modalities including EMDR, Brainspotting, and IFS. DBT is particularly relevant for clients managing emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, or self-harm — and its skills-based framework runs alongside the deeper trauma processing work that defines the Wings clinical model.

The full step-down continuum at Wings, from residential care through PHP and IOP, typically spans approximately 70 days. This is intentional. Most 30-day programs stabilize; Wings is designed to go further. The extended continuum allows for genuine trauma processing, mood stabilization, and the development of skills that hold up after discharge. Length of stay is individualized and determined in collaboration with the clinical team.

Wings Recovery is located in Carlsbad, CA, in North San Diego County, a coastal community known for its mild climate and proximity to the ocean. The residential program operates out of a comfortable, home-like setting intentionally kept small to support consistent clinical relationships, genuine peer community, and the psychological safety that trauma recovery requires. The therapeutic environment is designed to feel removed from the pace of daily life without feeling institutional.

Wings is not the right fit for everyone — and we’re transparent about that. We do not treat addiction-only cases, court-mandated clients, individuals requiring hospital-level psychiatric intervention, or those with significant medical complexity requiring ongoing physical care. This focus allows us to go deeper with the clients we do serve and maintain the clinical environment that makes Wings effective for complex trauma and primary mental health conditions.
